‘Things of the Aimless Wanderer’ by Rwandan film director Kivu Ruhorahoza is an almost dialogue-less surreal but raw exploration of post-genocide Rwanda where past and present blur into one.
It is rare to be involved in a film project where the music is almost the only sonic presence and I’m grateful to Kivu for giving me free rein to create this ambient/sound-collage/synth piece that matches the unsettled and sometimes disturbing atmosphere of the film.
Kivu liked the shofar sounds I used in my ‘Sinai’ piece from the ‘A Still, Thin Sound’ album, so I used those to accompany the ominous jungle images at the beginning of the film. A timeless, organic sound that, as the film develops, becomes more and more electronic and oppressive.
The piano represents the intrusive Westerners’ romantic view of Africa which misunderstands the people’s political and social reality. An ongoing problem and cause of much grief.
For the sake of this album release, the sequences have been edited together as one continuous piece.
